Q: Can a Datsun 510 Drift Competitively for Not Too Much?
Hey. I love 510,s but I really want too drift. Could it if i just stiffen the frame, put on struts and sway bars, use an sr20 and lower it REALLY low. And maybe strip out the interior.

A: I’ve got an SR powered 510, mildly modified engine, 195 rear tires, and it’s like driving on ice when you hammer it

But they’re not going for very cheap anymore….

go with a 240, it’s cheaper and an easier car to do the SR swap in

I’m looking for a 71′ or 72′ Datsun 510. Anyone know a good place to look for one of theses cars? I’ve looked on eBay Motors and they have like 3. Anywhere else I should look?

Q: Cost of an SR20DET Swap into a Datsun 510 2 Door?
Around how much approximately could i expect this to cost. I want to get a datsun within the month and plan on doing this swap very shortly after.

A: I would suspect the job done to a very high standard would cost more than $5,000. Because of the age of the car your using and antique suspension systems. Things like big brakes will be more difficult and that will add an additional $4,000 wheel tires add another $3,000 for 3 piece rims and performance tires. Suspension upgrades? I see a money pit but if you have plenty of money find a rust free 510 the end result might cost as much as a NEW 370Z with syncro rev and full warranty. As for crash worthiness the 510 will never be as safe as a late model Z car.

Q: How do You Feel about a Built Datsun 510?
I’m talkin a clean sr20det swap with the entire suspension and undercarriage done. Fresh blue paint with a clean engine bay and the interior done with race seats and new everything. And some new volk wheels of course

A: any old car that is done right and looks good draws attention…its a work of art…a Chevy corvair will be worth more money or a mustang but a lot of it is what you like and what your willing to spend..who knows there may be a market for that kinda thing in 5 years as prices for gas go up…

Q: I am looking at 71 Datsun 510 four door and wondering about engines.?
I have seen a 280 Z with a 350 Chevy engine in it and wondering if it would be possible to drop a 350 into a 510 or would it be totally insane to do it? lol.

A: I have seen it done. But to be honest you would be better off putting a turbo’d 240sx motor. They RIP! In fact just a stock one would be fun.

Q: will a datsun 510 rearend be able to handle a 289 sbf?
i have a 1970 datsun 510 and i want to do a 289 v8 swap in it. and i was wondering if the rearend will hold up. and also do i need to brace the frame/unibody?

Q: 1970 datsun 510 ring and pinion?
i have a 1970 datsun 510 and the gears in the rearend are really low so it goes slow. right now it has a 4 speed with a 1600cc with an 1800cc head i have a 5 speed that im planning on putting in it but i dont think thats going to be enough. so does anybody know where i can get a new ring and pinion with a higher gear ratio.
rack and pinion is a type steering! has nothing to do with how fast it goes ring and pinion are the gears in the rearend

Q: Is a Datsun 510 Coupe a Good Car?
Hey. I’m looking into buying an old 72 Datsun 510 two door. I would lower it, put racing wheels on it all new suspension and maintenence parts and finally drop in an sr20det. I want to know if this will effect the weight distribution too much and if the body can take power like that. Also, will this car be able to take turns and be a driven track car? Thanks a lot!

A: Hey cole, I also have a datson 510 coupe with an Sr20 and i don’t think you will have a problem with any type of weight distribution. While its probably not 50/50 because of how heavy the cast iron motor is, its probaby only 100lbs off, which you wont even be able to tell a difference. As far as the body goes, yes, it can hold the power an sr20 can give it all day long. However if you were wanting to do some heavy drag racing i would say get some subframe connectors. As far as being a track car with the right suspension upgrades the car shouldn’t have a problem, i drive my somewhat daily with not problem. But i would recommend coilovers, i think you can find some around 750-1000, ALL the bushings, i believe a whole kit is around 180, see if you can find a cheap brake upgrade like the 300zx kit or something, and strut and sway bars and you should be good to go! if you have anymore questions man just let me know! the only difficult thing for me is how to connected the ECU,and all the electrical stuff for the engine to run in my car.

A: 12A and 13B, yes. I don’t know what a 20B is. What you end up with is something a lot like a car Mazda made with the rotary already in it – the RX-3.
